We’re Halden Heating and Air Austin, and we provide Austin AC Repair as independent Carrier service across the city, from Mueller to Tarrytown to Circle C. The thing that makes our Carrier work different here: we know which models survive Austin summers and which ones get wrecked by cottonwood pollen, attic heat, and power flickers. We’re not a factory dealer. That means we fix what needs fixing without upselling you a replacement you don’t need. Call (361) 202-9170 and talk to a real person who knows Carrier systems.
Why Austin Residents Choose Us for Carrier Service
Carrier built some of the most efficient residential HVAC equipment on the market. The Infinity line, the Performance series, the old WeatherMaker furnaces, we’ve turned wrenches on all of them. Andre Fuller, our owner, learned the trade at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College and spent decades repairing everything from rooftop package units to high-efficiency heat pumps before bringing Halden to Austin. Our techs have seen enough Carrier systems in this city’s attics to know which capacitors swell first, which coils leak, and which communicating thermostats go haywire after a spring storm. We also sell and install Carrier through our Carrier sales & service program when a new unit makes more sense than another repair. Every job gets a written price before any work starts. Every repair gets a written guarantee. If the repair fails, we return free. No arguing, no fine print. We put it in writing before we touch a thing.

Common Carrier HVAC Problems We Solve in Austin
- Infinity variable-speed compressor lockouts from pollen-packed coils. Austin’s live oaks and cottonwoods dump pollen from March through June. On Infinity 24 heat pumps, that pollen mats onto the condenser coil, the compressor runs hot, and the system trips a high-pressure lockout. We clean the coil, check refrigerant pressures, and reset the control board. This is a recurring Austin issue, not a one-time fix.
- WeatherMaker 9200 cracked heat exchangers. Austin’s mild winters cause these older furnaces to short cycle. Short cycling stresses the metal, and after years it cracks. A cracked heat exchanger leaks carbon monoxide, which is a serious health risk. If you have a WeatherMaker 9200 in an older home, get it inspected before next winter. This is one repair we never patch. If the exchanger is cracked, the furnace is done.
- Performance 17 refrigerant leaks from formicary corrosion. Austin’s high humidity combined with VOCs from paints, cleaners, and new construction off-gassing creates formicary corrosion on evaporator coil end plates. The coil develops pinhole leaks. We see this constantly on Performance 17 two-stage ACs in homes near the Domain and other newer developments. We can replace the coil, but we’ll tell you honestly if a new system makes better financial sense.
- Carrier communicating thermostat failures after power flickers. Spring thunderstorms knock out power for two seconds, and the Infinity thermostat reboots into a default 50% airflow mode. Your house feels muggy even though the compressor runs constantly. This requires reprogramming, not just a filter change. We handle it on the same visit.
- Burned-out sequencers and fan limit switches from winter freezes. The 2021 freeze taught us exactly which Carrier heat pumps had undersized electric strip heat. When the strips run constantly in 10-degree weather, sequencers burn out and fan limit switches deform. We stock replacements for most Carrier models.
Carrier Service in Austin: What Local Conditions Mean for Your Equipment
Winter Storm Uri did more to a specific group of Carrier heat pumps than any other weather event we’ve seen. The worst failures weren’t in old houses. They were in newer eastside developments like Mueller, where builders installed Carrier heat pumps with electric strip heat sized for mild winters, not 6-degree nights. When those strips ran full-blast for days, blower housings melted, sequencers burned, and fan limit switches warped. We’re still repairing that damage on units that had never seen below 20 degrees before February 2021. That one storm exposed a Carrier-specific weakness tied directly to Austin’s build practices, not just the cold weather. It’s a fix we’ve done dozens of times now, and it’s one reason our techs know immediately what to check on any Carrier unit in a post-2010 eastside home. We’re not just guessing at what went wrong. We’ve seen the same failure mode repeat across the same neighborhoods. If your Carrier system struggled through Uri or any freeze since, call us at (361) 202-9170 and we’ll tell you whether it’s a quick part swap or a deeper design problem.
Carrier Models & Products We Service in Austin
We service the full Carrier residential lineup: Infinity 24 heat pumps, Performance 17 two-stage ACs, Comfort 13 entry-level splits, and the older WeatherMaker 9200 gas furnaces still common in Austin’s 1960s-90s homes. We use OEM Carrier parts when the factory part solves a known design issue. But when an older model has a backordered factory capacitor or a contactor priced three times what a quality aftermarket equivalent costs, we recommend the aftermarket option. We keep common Carrier parts on our trucks in Austin, which means fewer return trips and faster repairs when your AC is down in July. We also handle heat pump repair, capacitor replacement, and ERV/HRV systems on Carrier setups where ventilation is part of the install.

FAQs – Carrier HVAC in Austin
Nine times out of ten, the condenser coil is matted with cottonwood and oak pollen, the compressor is overheating, and the system has tripped a high-pressure lockout. The other cause is a swollen capacitor from the brutal attic-adjacent heat. We clean the coil, replace the capacitor if needed, and reset the lockout. Called out to East 11th Street in July for exactly this on an Infinity 24. Fixed it in under an hour with an OEM dual-run capacitor. Call (361) 202-9170 and we’ll do the same for yours.
Any WeatherMaker 9200 that has short-cycled through years of mild Austin winters is at higher risk for a cracked heat exchanger, and a cracked exchanger does produce carbon monoxide. That’s not alarmism. That’s a failure mode we see regularly. If yours hasn’t been checked, we do a combustion and heat exchanger inspection on every furnace repair. Call (361) 202-9170 and we’ll schedule it.
Yes. We’re an independent Carrier service provider, not a factory dealer, but we handle warranty parts paperwork with Carrier on your behalf. You pay the labor and any non-covered parts. The warranty stays valid because we use OEM parts where the warranty requires them.
No. A properly sealed system should not need refrigerant ever, regardless of Austin’s heat. If yours is low, there’s a leak. On Performance 17 units in Austin, the leak is usually at the evaporator coil end plates, caused by formicary corrosion from humidity and VOCs. We can find the leak with an electronic detector, show you exactly where it is, and give you a repair number versus a replacement number before you spend a dollar. Call (361) 202-9170 for that assessment.
That sound is usually the outdoor condenser coil in defrost mode while the fan blade or motor has wear, or the reversing valve is chattering under partial load. On older Carrier units, a failing compressor isolation grommet can also cause that rhythmic thumping. It’s not normal, and ignoring it tends to turn a $300 repair into a $2,000 one. Call (361) 202-9170 and we’ll diagnose it.
